As you set out on your analytics journey, it’s important to understand three things:

  • analytics are only as good as the questions you ask,
  • the power of analytics is strongest in a collaborative environment, and
  • quality data = quality analytics

Faster, More Informed Decision Making 

Regularly checking analytics allows you to benchmark and compare results based on strategic shifts you make in your business. For example, let’s say there is a particular role you are hiring for and see that typically, people hired into that role either leave after 9 months or stay for more than 3 years. You could begin to make changes in your onboarding process and analytics would assist you in benchmarking the impact of those changes.

Analytics can expose areas of the business that need improvement and give permission for anyone to ask the big questions. Imagine being able to have a constructive conversation about things that were previously only expressed as feelings. Now, armed with data, you can get a jump on detecting troublesome trends. Or, on the flip side, determine what factors impact a positive trend to that can establish best practices.


Most importantly, you can identify why things happen, rather than relying on your gut and differing opinions.


Improved Employee Engagement and Nurturing a Culture of Transparency

Analytics provide focus by creating a common language for organizations to communicate cross-functionally and across roles dispelling common fears.


  • “I’m not smart, so I won’t ask”
  • “Other’s get it and I don’t, so I won’t ask”


Additionally, managers and employees can better align their definitions of success and set clear expectations on how that success will be measured.


From a team perspective, you can lean into issues and success, bringing more of the right people to the table. For example, if the dashboards expose an opportunity to improve the scheduling strategy for a particular product line, you can engage the individuals in that department to bring solutions to the table, improving both visibility and ownership.
